Save the Children and UNICEF Release a New Report on Child Labor
A new report released by Save the Children and the United Nations Children's Fund reveals that children work in more than 75% of surveyed Syrian households. Syria, which entered war four years ago, has an abundance of children as young as six laboring to support themselves and their families. Prior to the war, Syria was considered a middle-income country with a literacy rate of 90%. Refugee Syrians in neighboring countries were also surveyed for the report, which found that nearly half of Syrian refugee children work as joint or sole wage-earners for their families. 75% of children surveyed at Jordan's Zaatari refugee camp for Syrians experience health problems at work, and more than 20% who do farmwork in Jordan have been injured while working. The report concludes that, "Syria's children are paying a heavy price for the world's failure to put an end to the conflict."
